Acupuncture Q & A

What health conditions are treated with acupuncture?

Acupuncture improves diverse health conditions. It’s so effective at relieving pain that it’s recommended as a nondrug approach to chronic low back pain. This list shows some of the conditions that may benefit from acupuncture treatment:

  • Chronic pain throughout the body (lower back, neck, fibromyalgia)
  • Headaches (tension headaches, migraines)
  • Digestive disorders (irritable bowel syndrome, constipation, colitis, gastritis)
  • Women’s reproductive disorders (irregular periods, menstrual cramps, menopausal symptoms)
  • Psychological and emotional disorders (anxiety, stress, depression)

How is acupuncture performed?

During your acupuncture session, Ms. Vasquez places very thin needles into acupuncture points, which are specifically identified areas of your body. A session takes about 45-60 minutes, but your treatment time depends on the number of needles inserted and how long they stay in place.

The needles may be warmed, twirled, or connected to a source of low-intensity electricity. These activities help stimulate the acupuncture point, which boosts healing.

What should you expect when acupuncture needles are inserted?

Acupuncture needles are solid, hair thin, flexible, and tapered. Due to their unique construction, they slide smoothly into your skin. You may feel a slight pinch when they’re inserted, but you won’t feel any discomfort once the needle is in place.

Some people say they feel a tingling sensation from the needle, which is a normal and expected. You may also feel slight warmth if the needles are heated or used to transmit electrical stimulation.

Does acupuncture work?

Acupuncture treatment is based on biological energy, called Qi, that circulates throughout your body. When you’re in good health, Qi freely flows along pathways in your body called meridians.

Each meridian is associated with an organ system in your body. Disease, illness, and pain develop in any system when Qi is blocked. Precise placement of acupuncture needles restores the normal flow of energy, which enables the body to use its natural healing power.

While acupuncture balances the flow of energy, it also has a physical impact. Acupuncture points -- the spots where needles are inserted -- are often near areas of high nerve activity.

When acupuncture needles stimulate these areas, they transmit electrical messages to the brain; then the brain releases natural endorphins and neurotransmitters. As a result of these chemicals, acupuncture relieves pain, lowers inflammation, and strengthens the immune system.
